ABOUT repurposed wood

Reclaimed wood from snow fence is eco- friendly AND SUSTAINABLE

Centennial Woods™ is all about repurposed wood; we build, maintain, and eventually reclaim aged wood from 100s of miles worth of snow fences that line the Wyoming roadways. Snow fences near highways and interstates help to reduce powerful bouts of frequent wind combined with heavy snow. Eventually, the beautifully weathered boards get taken down and can be repurposed for a wide variety of interior and exterior applications. While traveling through Wyoming on summer road trips, children and parents alike have often wondered what large structures are for. Locals like to tease tourists by telling them “they’re the bleachers for watching antelope races.” In reality, they are an important part of a winter driving safety program that that helps keep roadways safe and interstate commerce flowing.

These 12 foot tall wooden structures endure hurricane-force winds to prevent snow drifts from forming on Wyoming’s roads during the brutally long winters. A wonderful side effect of the weather pummeling these fences is that It produces stunning and sustainable weathered wood.

The Wyoming climate is so varied and intense that after a decade our wood only has a moisture content between 4% and 8% making it inhospitable to insects; this allows our wood to skip the energy-intensive process of kiln drying, which contributes towards making our reclaimed wood a carbon-negative product. Centennial Woods™ has repurposed more than 22.3 million feet of reclaimed wood and avoided more than 18,000 tons of CO2 emissions since 1999.

At CENTENNIAL WOODS™ OUR WOOD SERVED ITS FIRST LIFE KEEPING ROADS SAFE AND ITS SECOND LIFE AS GORGEOUS BUILDING AND DESIGN ELEMENTS

Over the years, Centennial Woods™ has evolved into a business involving public and private partnerships building and maintaining Wyoming Snow Fences. . Before these partnerships were established, snow fences were built until they failed, at which point they were burned or disposed of in a landfill. Today, Centennial woods reclaims the wood fencing, and repurposes it using state of the art milling equipment. For over 20 years we have been providing sustainable building materials to architects, designers, retailers, contractors, and consumers worldwide.
