FAQs

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Our Reclaimed Wood.
WHERE CAN I BUY RECLAIMED WOOD?

If you don’t have access to a local store specializing in reclaimed wood, the most reliable way to purchase safe, consistent, and sustainable distressed wood is through Centennial Woods. Although we’re based in Wyoming, we can ship our wall planks, wooden planks, siding, and more anywhere in the world. If you're searching for reclaimed wood near you, contact us (307-314-1360) to discuss your project and receive a free estimate!

HOW MUCH DOES RECLAIMED WOOD COST?

The price of reclaimed wood can vary widely depending on its source and quality. High-end suppliers might charge as much as $25 per square foot for precision-milled beams and planks from unique or historic locations. Alternatively, you might find a property owner willing to give away old wood if you handle the removal yourself, but this wood usually requires extensive cleaning and milling. Our reclaimed wood from Wyoming snow fences is of consistently high quality and competitively priced, generally ranging from $7 to $14 per square foot. We also offer additional services such as de-nailing, waterproofing, fire retardant application, and custom colors. For pricing and more information, call us (307-314-1360) or fill out a form to get a free estimate!

WHAT IS THE TYPICAL LEAD TIME FOR RECLAIMED WOOD?

Products made from reclaimed snow fence wood are often available for immediate purchase online. However, custom orders and larger quantities might take around a month to prepare for shipping. The boards from our snow fences take about 7 to 10 years to develop their rich texture and patina. Once ready, they are transported to our Centennial Woods facility in Laramie, WY. Factors like weather conditions, road accessibility, and wildlife migration can impact production times. For the most accurate lead time, please call us (307-314-1360) or fill out a form to get a free estimate!

WHAT EXACTLY IS RECLAIMED WOOD?

Reclaimed wood is lumber that has been repurposed after fulfilling its original use. The quality and consistency of reclaimed wood can differ depending on where it’s sourced. Many suppliers struggle with inconsistent dimensions and quality due to limited supplies. Boards reclaimed from the same structure can vary greatly, especially if exposed to different environmental conditions. Centennial Woods operates the most consistent system to supply reclaimed wood, sourced from Wyoming snow fences that naturally age over approximately 10 years. The wood develops uniform coloration and texture, ideal for creating unique and sustainable wall planks and other products. To learn more about reclaimed wood and our reclaimed wood process, visit the Ultimate Guide to Reclaimed Wood in our blogs section.

IS RECLAIMED WOOD SAFE FOR INDOOR USE?

While reclaimed barn wood and pallet wood are generally safe for exterior projects, caution is needed for indoor applications due to potential contaminants like mold, VOCs, and insect damage. It’s important to ask your reclaimed wood supplier if the planks have been kiln-dried to eliminate these hazards. The natural aging process of our reclaimed wood eliminates the need for kiln-drying, making it safe for indoor use in homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals. Our products are certified for low chemical emissions, earning GREENGUARD Gold certification for indoor air quality. To learn more about the safety of our reclaimed wood, visit our website.

WHAT IS SHIPLAP WOOD?

Shiplap wood is a type of wood plank known for its rabbeted edges, allowing the boards to overlap for a seamless, tight fit. This design helps with waterproofing and weatherproofing. The rabbeted edges ensure a smooth, flush joint, making shiplap popular in various wall applications. Some installations may feature a small gap between planks for a decorative look, known as a "nickel gap." It is important to note, that the term shiplap is frequently just used interchangeably with “wood planks” and “paneling.”

CAN I REQUEST A SPECIFIC COLOR RANGE FOR MY RECLAIMED WOOD?

Many reclaimed wood suppliers struggle to fulfill specific color requests because their wood is sourced from multiple locations. However, at Centennial Woods, our wooden planks have consistent coloring. While our wood colors are generally consistent year after year, some variation is natural. We strive to meet your specific aesthetic needs, though very particular requests may increase the cost and lead time of your planks. We also offer custom finishes, including stains and distressed paint techniques.

WILL THE COLOR OF RECLAIMED WOOD CHANGE OVER TIME?

Yes, the color, hue, and patina of reclaimed wood will gradually evolve over the years, especially when used as exterior siding. Walls facing south in the northern hemisphere will experience faster weathering due to direct sun exposure.

HOW ARE CASPER RECLAIMED WOOD PLANKS DIFFERENT FROM OTHER WHITE WOOD PLANKS?

Casper reclaimed wood planks offer a unique, distressed whitewash finish that is achieved through our custom process, giving each plank a rugged, natural look. Unlike other white wood planks that may be mass-produced, our Casper planks are reclaimed from Wyoming’s snow fences, providing a truly authentic and sustainable option for your next DIY project.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN AND MAINTAIN CASPER RECLAIMED WOOD PLANKS?

To clean your Casper reclaimed wood planks, simply use a dry brush or shop vac to remove any unwanted dust or debris. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the whitewashed finish.

CAN CASPER RECLAIMED WOOD PLANKS BE PAINTED OR STAINED?

While the Casper reclaimed wood planks come with a beautiful distressed whitewash finish, they can be further customized with paint or stain if desired. However, we recommend testing a small area first to ensure the desired effect, as the existing whitewash finish may alter the final appearance of the paint or stain.

HOW DO CASPER RECLAIMED WOOD PLANKS PERFORM IN DIFFERENT CLIMATES?

Casper reclaimed wood planks are naturally aged and weathered in Wyoming's harsh climate, making them incredibly durable and suitable for a variety of environments. Whether you're in a dry, hot climate or a region with high humidity, these planks are designed to withstand the elements. For outdoor or high-humidity installations, we suggest adding Centennial Seal to add an extra layer of protection. Keep in mind, boards installed in a high-humidity room or climate should be acclimated for 5 days before installation. This involves removing the bundles of wood from their boxes and letting them adjust to the environment with nylon straps intact before installation.
