This Shou Sugi Ban wood starts out as naturally aged slats from Wyoming snow fences. The distressed surface is removed from the wood and sanded smooth.  Next, the boards are charred with flame using the Japanese finish technique of “shou sugi ban.” After being exposed to a flame we gently brush the boards. The brushing removes excess carbon from the wood, smooths the grain, and brings out the color of the wood revealing beautiful coffee, caramel, and even mahogany hues.

Shou sugi ban wood is more flame retardant and water/insect resistant than wood that has not been charred. This technique became quite popular in Japan due to regularity of fires that happen after earthquakes.

Reclaimed boards in the Yellowstone finish are low in Volatile Organic Compunds (certified GREENGUARD Gold), insect-free, and have never been chemically treated or exposed to barnyard animal waste like some barn wood.

The Yellowstone finish is available on reclaimed wood interior paneling, interior tongue & groove, and interior shiplap. This finish is often found in spaces with a Rustic, Modern Rustic, Classic, Mountain, Boho, Asian, or Traditional styles.
